Paint, stain, oil, restore — or leave it?

Harkaway is a small semi-rural suburb in the north-east of the City of Casey: a village of houses on traditional blocks surrounded by lifestyle and hobby-farm properties. Decks here range from compact village-home decks to large entertaining decks, wrap-around verandahs and elevated decks on sloping land, often set among established trees and gardens.

Because properties vary so much in size, age, construction and access, each deck is assessed individually. The right finish depends on the timber species, its age and exposure, the existing coating, its condition, the look you want, foot traffic, how much maintenance you are happy with and — for composite boards — the manufacturer’s requirements. Solid-colour painting is an important option, but it isn’t right for every deck.

Northern Star Painting is based in Hallam and works across Harkaway and nearby Berwick and Narre Warren North.

Decks we paint, stain and restore

MerbauContains natural oils and tannins that can bleed and affect adhesion, so it is prepared to the coating manufacturer’s instructions first.
Spotted gum & blackbuttDense hardwoods that suit stains and oils as well as paint, depending on the look you want and the existing finish.
Treated pineCommon on stairs and framing. Moisture content and the coating system matter more than the species name.
Weathered & grey timberGrey oxidised fibres are sanded back before coating so the new finish has a sound surface to bond to.
Previously painted decksOld coatings are checked for adhesion; failing material is removed rather than coated over.
Large & elevated decksLonger stairs and raised sections can need more access planning and staging.
Verandahs & wrap-around porchesBoards, posts and edges are prepared and coated as one connected area.
Pergolas, stairs & balustradesPosts, beams, handrails and balustrades can be included in the scope. We make no compliance claims about these structures.
Composite deckingComposite decking is assessed case by case. Some manufacturers do not recommend coating their products, while others may permit specific coating systems. We check the product and manufacturer requirements before recommending a coating.

Paint, stain or oil?

Pigmented finishes generally give stronger UV screening than clear ones, but durability depends on the product, exposure, timber and maintenance. No finish is maintenance free.

Solid-colour deck painting

Deck paints are not wall paints on a deck — they are made to cope with foot traffic, UV, moisture, timber movement and furniture. For example, Cabot’s describes its Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint as self-priming on most surfaces and designed to be walked on. Where a solid-colour timber paint is selected, the exact preparation and number of coats will follow the manufacturer’s system.

New timber needs different preparation

Tannins and natural oils in new timber can affect adhesion and appearance. New boards are prepared as the coating manufacturer specifies and left to dry according to its instructions — there is no universal waiting period.

Weathered decks need more than a wash

Grey oxidised fibres need sanding back, failing coatings need removing and damaged boards need identifying before anything is applied. Sanding improves the surface; it does not make structurally damaged timber sound.

Test before committing to a new coating

Where the existing coating is uncertain, we check its type and adhesion before recommending a system, and remove failing material rather than coating over it. This is a practical site check, not a laboratory test.

Our deck process

  1. 01

    Inspection and quote

We look at the timber, existing finish, condition, stairs, elevation and access, then give you a written scope.

  2. 02

    Cleaning suited to the surface

The cleaning method is chosen for the timber and coating — not a blanket pressure wash.

  3. 03

    Sanding and preparation

Weathered fibres, failing coatings and rough areas are dealt with so the new finish can bond.

  4. 04

    Repairs identified

Any damaged boards or structural issues are identified and discussed before coating.

  5. 05

    Coating system

Applied to the manufacturer’s system. Some solid-colour systems specify three coats on unpainted timber; the final schedule follows the manufacturer and the surface.

  6. 06

    Quality check and walkthrough

We check coverage, edges and finish, then walk you through the completed work.

Deck conditions around Harkaway

Tree cover and leaf litter can mean shade, lingering moisture, mould and algae. Elevated decks and long stairs on sloping land can need extra access planning, and open decks can take strong sun and wind. Summer UV and wet winters both work on a coating over time.

If horses or livestock are kept nearby, mention it at quote so the coating choice and curing time can be discussed against the product’s data sheet. We make no claims about any product’s safety for animals.

Older decks, planning and safety

Older painted timber should be treated cautiously because pre-1970s paint may contain lead. We do not recommend disturbing an old coating until its condition and appropriate handling have been considered.

Some Harkaway properties are affected by planning overlays, and external controls can apply to some; owners should check their property with the City of Casey before changing externally visible colours or finishes.

Painting or coating a deck does not make the deck structure, balustrade or pool barrier compliant with building or safety requirements, and it does not change a building’s bushfire compliance.

Our published indicative ranges are Small deck — clean, sand and oil: $800 – $2,000+; Standard deck — restoration and stain: $1,800 – $5,000+; Large or multi-level deck: $4,000 – $9,000+. Is it better to paint or oil a deck?

Neither is universally better. Paint gives the strongest colour change and hides grain; oil keeps a natural look and is easier to refresh but usually needs more frequent maintenance. The right choice depends on the timber, exposure, existing coating and how much upkeep you want.

Can you paint a Merbau deck?

Yes, with the right preparation. Merbau contains natural oils and tannins that can affect adhesion and appearance, so it is prepared according to the coating manufacturer’s instructions before any paint, stain or oil goes on.

Do you need to sand a deck before painting?

Usually some sanding is needed — to remove grey weathered fibres, failing coatings or rough areas — but the amount depends on the deck’s condition and the coating system chosen.

Can you paint composite decking?

It depends on the manufacturer. Some do not recommend coating their products, while others permit specific coating systems. We check the product and manufacturer requirements before recommending anything.

Can you paint an old weathered deck?

Often, yes, if the timber is structurally sound. Weathered decks need more than a wash: grey fibres are sanded back, failing coatings removed and damaged boards identified first. Sanding does not make structurally damaged timber sound.

Is painted decking slippery?

It depends on the coating system and conditions. Some finishes can be slippery when wet; a slip-resistant additive or a different finish can be discussed at quote.

What is the best time of year to paint a deck?

It depends on the product, the moisture in the timber, temperature and the forecast. Coatings need suitable drying conditions, so we schedule around the manufacturer’s requirements and the weather.

How long does a painted deck last?

There is no fixed lifespan. Durability depends on the product, exposure, timber, preparation, foot traffic and maintenance. Pigmented finishes generally give stronger UV screening than clear ones.

Can you repair damaged boards?

Any damaged boards or structural issues are identified and discussed with you before coating, so you know what needs attention and who should handle it.
