Choosing the right finish for your deck
Narre Warren is a large, established suburb with housing from the 1960s through to newer estates and townhouse developments. Decks here range from older timber decks and pergolas behind established homes to pool surrounds, courtyard decks and balconies on townhouses, so size, age, exposure and construction vary a lot.
That’s why we assess each deck before recommending anything. The right finish depends on the timber, its condition, sun and shade, the existing coating, foot traffic and how much upkeep you want — not on a one-size-fits-all restoration package.
Northern Star Painting is based in neighbouring Hallam and works across Narre Warren every week.
Decks we paint, stain and restore
Paint, stain or oil?
Pigmented finishes generally give stronger UV screening than clear ones, but durability depends on the product, exposure, timber and maintenance. No finish is maintenance free.
| Finish | Appearance | UV & weather | Maintenance | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solid-colour deck paint | Strongest colour change; hides grain | Good with the full system applied | Traffic areas wear; prep is critical | Older or patched timber, set colour schemes |
| Semi-transparent stain | Colour with grain visible | Pigment adds UV screening | Periodic recoating | Sound timber where grain should show |
| Penetrating oil | Natural timber look | Lighter protection | Easier to refresh, usually more often | Hardwood decks and pool surrounds |
Preparation makes the finish
New timber needs different preparation from weathered timber: tannins and oils are dealt with as the manufacturer specifies, and boards are left to dry per its instructions. Weathered decks need sanding, failing coatings removed and damaged boards identified. Where an old coating is uncertain, we check it before recommending a new system.
Deck conditions around Narre Warren
Shaded courtyards between townhouses can hold moisture and grow mould or algae. Open backyard decks and pool surrounds can take strong afternoon sun. Established trees drop leaf litter between boards. Each of these affects which finish suits and how often it may need attention.
Townhouses, owners corporations and estates
Some Narre Warren homes are townhouses or part of multi-dwelling developments where decks, courtyards or common areas may belong to an owners corporation, and some newer estates have design guidelines about colours and materials. Check with your owners corporation or estate before choosing a colour or booking work. This is general information, not legal advice.
Landlords and property managers
For rental properties we can coordinate access with tenants and provide a written scope and quote for the owner or property manager to approve before work begins.
Older decks and safety
Older painted timber should be treated cautiously because pre-1970s paint may contain lead. We don’t recommend disturbing an old coating until its condition and appropriate handling have been considered. Painting a deck does not make the structure, balustrade or pool barrier compliant with building or safety requirements.
Our deck process
- 01
Inspection and quote
Timber, existing finish, condition, stairs and access are checked, then scoped in writing.
- 02
Cleaning suited to the surface
The method is chosen for the timber and coating — not a blanket pressure wash.
- 03
Sanding and preparation
Weathered fibres, failing coatings and rough areas are dealt with first.
- 04
Repairs identified
Any damaged boards or structural issues are identified and discussed before coating.
- 05
Coating system
Applied to the manufacturer’s system; the number of coats follows the product and the surface.
- 06
Quality check and walkthrough
We check coverage, edges and finish, then walk you through the completed deck.

Should I paint, stain or oil my deck?
It depends on the timber, its condition, exposure, the existing coating and the look and maintenance you want. Paint gives the strongest colour change; stain shows the grain with added colour; oil keeps a natural look but usually needs refreshing more often.
Can you paint a Merbau deck?
Yes, with the right preparation. Merbau contains natural oils and tannins that can bleed and affect adhesion, so it is prepared to the coating manufacturer’s instructions first.
Can you restore an old timber deck or pergola?
Often, yes, if the timber is structurally sound. Grey fibres are sanded back, failing coatings removed and damaged boards identified before coating. Sanding does not make structurally damaged timber sound.
Can you paint composite decking?
It depends on the manufacturer. Some do not recommend coating their products, while others permit specific systems. We check the product and manufacturer requirements first.
My townhouse deck is part of an owners corporation — can you still do it?
Yes, once you have checked with your owners corporation. Decks, courtyards and common areas may belong to the owners corporation, and some have rules on colours and materials. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you paint decks for landlords and property managers?
Yes. We can arrange access with tenants and provide a written scope and quote for the owner or manager to approve before work starts.
Is painted decking slippery?
It depends on the coating system and conditions. Some finishes can be slippery when wet; a slip-resistant additive or a different finish can be discussed at quote.
How long does a deck finish last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the product, sun and shade, timber, preparation, foot traffic and maintenance.
