Should this deck be painted, stained, oiled — or left alone?

We assess the deck first and recommend a system that suits it — solid-colour painting is a great result for many decks, but it is not the right choice for every deck.

Solid-colour deck painting, done properly

Deck paints are not wall paints used outdoors. A deck coating has to cope with foot traffic, UV, moisture, timber movement, dirt and furniture. As an example, Cabot's Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint is described by its manufacturer as self-priming on most surfaces and designed to be walked on. Where a solid-colour timber paint is selected, the exact preparation and number of coats will follow the manufacturer's system.

New timber needs different preparation

New timber can contain tannins and natural oils that affect adhesion and appearance. Preparation follows the manufacturer's system — which may mean a new-timber preparation product, or weathering where the manufacturer permits it, then drying per their instructions. There is no universal waiting period that suits every product.

Weathered decks need more than a wash

Grey, oxidised fibres, failing old coatings and damaged boards all change the job. Sanding may be needed to get back to sound timber, failing coatings are removed, and damaged boards are identified and discussed before coating. Sanding improves the surface — it does not make structurally damaged timber sound.

Test before committing to a new coating

Where an old finish is uncertain, we inspect it and test adhesion rather than guessing. Failing material is removed rather than coated over, so the new system bonds to something sound.

Established trees and gardens can mean more shade, leaf litter, moisture and mould or algae on timber. Elevated decks and long stairs on sloping sites can need extra access planning. Strong summer UV, wet winters and everyday foot traffic all affect how a coating wears — which is why each deck is judged on its own condition rather than a generic recipe.

Older properties and planning

Older painted timber should be treated cautiously because pre-1970s paint may contain lead. We do not recommend disturbing an old coating until its condition and appropriate handling requirements have been considered.

An honest note on safety

Painting or coating a deck does not make the deck structure, balustrade or pool barrier compliant with building or safety requirements. A coating is a surface finish, not a structural certification.

Choosing a deck colour or finish

The finish should sit well with the house exterior, roof, fence, landscaping, paving, doors and windows — and with the timber itself. Charcoal, grey and neutral tones are common examples, but no colour is objectively best for every home.
