Your exterior paint is the barrier between your building materials and the weather. When it fails, timber swells and rots, render cracks let water into the substrate, and window frames start dropping putty. Repainting on the right cycle is significantly cheaper than repairing the damage that comes from leaving it too long.

Melbourne is a hard climate for exterior coatings. Wide daily temperature swings, driving rain from the south-west and strong UV in summer all attack a film that was not prepared and specified properly. Preparation for an exterior that lasts

Every exterior job starts with a high-pressure wash to strip dirt, chalking, mould and salt build-up. Nothing sticks to a dirty wall, and a rushed wash is the single most common reason a cheap exterior repaint peels within two years.

Loose and flaking coatings are scraped back to a sound edge and feathered. Bare timber is sanded and primed with an oil-based or specialised acrylic timber primer within the same day so it does not take up moisture. Rot and split boards are cut out and replaced or filled with a two-pack timber filler. Nail holes are punched and filled, and gaps around window and door frames are re-caulked with a paintable exterior sealant.

Render cracks are cut out, filled and sealed. We identify the difference between cosmetic hairline crazing and structural movement, and we tell you honestly which one you have rather than painting over the second and hoping.

Weather, access and safety

Exterior coatings have application temperature and humidity windows. We do not apply topcoats to a surface that will not cure, and we will delay a day rather than trap moisture under a film. That is why we build weather contingency into the schedule up front instead of surprising you with it later.

Double-storey and steep-site work is completed with proper scaffolding or elevated work platforms where required. We are fully insured and work to standard height-safety requirements — a painter working off an unsecured ladder at second-storey height is a risk you should not be carrying on your property.

How often should a Melbourne home be repainted?
