Colour is the decision people regret most
Almost nobody regrets the quality of their preparation. Plenty of people regret their colour. A shade chosen from a 50mm chip under fluorescent shop lighting behaves completely differently across four metres of south-facing wall in Melbourne light, and by the time you can see it, it is already two coats on.
A consultation removes that risk. We look at your rooms, your orientation, your flooring, joinery, tiles and furniture, and build a palette that works as a whole house rather than a set of individually nice colours.
In-home colour consultation
We come to you. Colour cannot be advised over the phone, because the two things that decide how a colour reads — the light in the room and the finishes already in it — only exist on site.
We walk each space, note orientation and window size, look at what is staying and what is going, and talk through how you want the room to feel. You get a written colour schedule listing wall, ceiling, trim, door and feature colours room by room, with the exact product code and sheen level for each.
Sample swatch testing and palette matching
We supply large-format sample boards rather than painting patches directly on your wall, so you can move a colour between rooms and check it against morning and evening light without leaving marks behind.
Palette matching keeps the whole home coherent: a wall colour, a softer ceiling white, a trim white that does not clash with the wall, and one or two accent tones carried through consistently. Where a builder or designer has supplied a scheme, we work to it and flag any product or sheen issues before ordering.
Interior and exterior finish selection advice
Colour is only half the decision — sheen level changes everything about how a colour performs and how it looks. Matt hides wall imperfections but marks more easily. Low-sheen is the practical default for living areas and hallways. Semi-gloss and gloss belong on trims, doors and wet areas where washability matters.
On exteriors we advise on light reflectance value as well as colour. Very dark facade colours absorb heat and move more in Melbourne's temperature swings, which shortens the life of the coating on some substrates. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a colour consultation if I already know what I want painted?
Not necessarily. If you have your colours locked in and you are happy with them, we will simply quote the work. A consultation is worth it when you are choosing between options, matching to existing finishes, or unsure about sheen levels — it usually costs less than repainting a room you got wrong.
Is colour consultation included in a full repaint quote, or is it separate?
On larger residential repaints we include colour consultation as part of the project at no extra charge. As a standalone service, or for smaller jobs, it is quoted separately and the fee is credited back if you go ahead with the painting.
Can you help match a colour to existing tiles, benchtops or flooring?
Yes — that is one of the most common reasons people book. We match to the undertones in your tiles, stone, timber or carpet rather than to the colour name, because a warm white against a cool grey tile is what makes a room feel off even when both colours are fine on their own.
