Decks among trees and bushland

Lysterfield is a leafy, semi-rural suburb beside Lysterfield Park, with estate homes alongside acreage and lifestyle properties. Decks here are often larger entertaining decks or elevated decks set among established trees close to bushland, where leaf litter, sap, shade and moisture can all affect how a finish wears.

Because the timber, exposure and existing coating vary so much, each deck is assessed individually before we recommend paint, stain or oil — and we explain the maintenance each option involves.

Northern Star Painting is based in Hallam and works across Lysterfield and Melbourne’s south-east.

Decks we paint, stain and restore

Merbau & hardwoodsNatural oils and tannins are dealt with as the coating manufacturer specifies before any finish.
Treated pineCommon on stairs and framing; moisture content and the coating system matter most.
Large entertaining decksBigger areas, multiple levels and long edges planned and staged properly.
Elevated decks & stairsRaised sections and long stairs can need extra access planning.
Verandahs & pergolasPosts, beams and boards prepared and coated as one connected area.
Weathered & grey timberGrey fibres are sanded back so the new finish has a sound surface.
Composite deckingComposite decking is assessed case by case. Some manufacturers do not recommend coating their products, while others may permit specific coating systems. We check the product and manufacturer requirements before recommending a coating.

Paint, stain or oil?

Pigmented finishes generally give stronger UV screening than clear ones, but durability depends on the product, exposure, timber and maintenance. No finish is maintenance free.

Deck conditions around Lysterfield

Tree cover can mean shade, lingering moisture, mould, algae and sap on boards, plus leaf litter between them. Open decks can take strong sun. If horses are kept nearby, mention it at quote so the coating choice and curing time can be discussed against the product’s data sheet — we make no claims about product safety for animals.

Older decks, bushfire areas and safety

Older painted timber may contain lead, so we don’t disturb an old coating until its condition and appropriate handling have been considered. Some Lysterfield properties are in bushfire-prone areas; a coating does not change a building’s bushfire compliance. Painting a deck also doesn’t make the structure, stairs or balustrade compliant with building or safety requirements.

Our deck process

  1. 01

    Inspection and quote

Timber, existing finish, condition, stairs, elevation and access are checked, then scoped in writing.

  2. 02

    Cleaning suited to the surface

Leaf litter, sap and growth are removed with a method suited to the timber — not a blanket pressure wash.

  3. 03

    Sanding and preparation

Weathered fibres, failing coatings and rough areas are dealt with first.

  4. 04

    Repairs identified

Any damaged boards or structural issues are identified and discussed before coating.

  5. 05

    Coating system

Applied to the manufacturer’s system; the number of coats follows the product and the surface.

  6. 06

    Quality check and walkthrough

We check coverage, edges and finish, then walk you through the completed deck.

Should I paint, stain or oil my deck?

Neither is universally better. Paint gives the strongest colour change; stain shows the grain with colour; oil keeps a natural look but usually needs refreshing more often. It depends on the timber, exposure and the upkeep you want.

My deck is under big trees — does that matter?

It can. Leaf litter, sap, shade and moisture near trees and bushland can encourage mould and algae and affect how a finish wears, so cleaning and the coating choice are planned around it.

Can you coat large or elevated entertaining decks?

Yes. Larger and elevated decks with long stairs can need extra access planning and staging, which is included in the written scope.

Can you paint composite decking?

It depends on the manufacturer. Some do not recommend coating their products, while others permit specific systems. We check the product and manufacturer requirements first.

Can you paint a Merbau or hardwood deck?

Yes, with the right preparation. Merbau and other hardwoods contain natural oils and tannins that can affect adhesion, so preparation follows the coating manufacturer’s instructions.

What if horses are kept nearby?

Mention it at quote so the coating choice and curing time can be discussed against the product’s data sheet. We make no claims about any product’s safety for animals.

Does painting a deck change bushfire compliance?

No. Some Lysterfield properties are in bushfire-prone areas, but a coating does not change a building’s bushfire compliance or BAL rating.

How long does a deck finish last?

There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the product, shade, timber, preparation, foot traffic and maintenance.
