Fences on estate, acreage and lifestyle blocks

Lysterfield is a leafy, semi-rural suburb beside Lysterfield Park, with estate homes alongside acreage and lifestyle properties. Fencing ranges from timber and Colorbond boundary fences on estate blocks to long rural runs, post-and-rail paddock fencing and entry gates on larger properties.

Trees and bushland nearby mean leaf litter and moisture against many fence lines, and horses are kept on some properties. Every fence is assessed individually before we recommend paint, stain, or a repair first.

Northern Star Painting is based in Hallam and works across Lysterfield and Melbourne’s south-east.

Paint, stain, repair or replace?

A coating protects and refreshes a sound fence. It does not fix rotten posts, loose palings or structural failure.

OptionWhat it meansWhen it may suit
PaintSolid colour coatingSound fences where a uniform colour is wanted
StainColour with grain visibleSound timber where a natural look is preferred
Repair + coatDefects fixed by the right trade firstIsolated loose palings or damaged rails
ReplaceNew fencing by a fencing contractorExtensively rotten or failed fencing

Horses and animals

If horses or other animals are kept on or beside the fence, tell us at quote so access, drying and curing time and the coating choice can be discussed against the manufacturer’s data sheet, with animals kept away until it is appropriate. We make no claim that any coating is safe for animals.

Dividing fences and neighbours

A dividing fence between two properties is generally shared under Victoria’s Fences Act 1968, so owners should talk to their neighbour before changing the appearance or colour of their side. This is general information, not legal advice; Consumer Affairs Victoria has guidance.

COLORBOND® warranty, asbestos, lead and bushfire areas

BlueScope advises that overpainting COLORBOND® steel can affect or void its warranty, so check your warranty conditions first. Older cement-sheet fences may contain asbestos and must be assessed before disturbance; older painted timber may contain lead. Some Lysterfield properties are in bushfire-prone areas — painting a fence does not change a property’s bushfire compliance.

Our fence process

  1. 01

    Inspection and quote

Material, length, height, gates, access, existing coating, vegetation and animals are checked, then scoped in writing.

  2. 02

    Cleaning suited to the material

Leaf litter and growth removed — never a blanket pressure wash, and never on asbestos cement.

  3. 03

    Preparation

Sanding, scraping and rust treatment; any repairs needed are identified before coating.

  4. 04

    Priming as needed

Bare timber, steel and masonry primed to suit the system.

  5. 05

    Coating system

Applied to the manufacturer’s requirements — there is no universal coat count.

  6. 06

    Quality check and walkthrough

We check coverage, edges and gates, then walk you through the finished fence.

Fence Painting Lysterfield FAQs

How much does fence painting cost in Lysterfield?

There is no set Lysterfield price. Our published indicative ranges are Standard residential fence: $600 – $2,500+; Long boundary or double-sided fence: $2,500 – $6,000+. Length, height, material, condition, gates, access and vegetation all affect the price. Every project is individually quoted after inspection, with the agreed scope provided in writing.

Can you paint long boundary and post-and-rail fences?

Yes. Long runs and paddock-style post-and-rail fencing are measured at inspection, with access along the fence line planned in the scope.

Should I paint or stain a timber fence?

Paint gives a solid, uniform colour; stain lets the grain show and is often easier to refresh. It depends on the timber, its condition and the look you want.

Can you paint a Colorbond® fence?

Yes, with the right preparation and coating system. BlueScope advises that overpainting can affect its warranty, so check your warranty conditions first.

Can you paint entry gates?

Yes. Timber and metal entry gates, posts and pillars can be included and prepared to suit each material.

What if horses are kept beside the fence?

Tell us at quote so access, drying and curing time and the coating choice can be discussed against the manufacturer’s data sheet, with animals kept away until that data sheet says it’s appropriate. We make no claim that any coating is safe for animals.

Do I need to tell my neighbour?

A dividing fence is generally shared under Victoria’s Fences Act 1968, so talk to your neighbour before changing the appearance or colour of your side. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can you paint an old cement-sheet fence?

Older cement-sheet fences may contain asbestos and must be assessed by a qualified professional before cleaning or disturbance. They are never pressure-washed.

How long does a painted fence last?

There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the material, preparation, shade, moisture, plant contact and the coating system.
