Fences on village blocks and lifestyle properties
Harkaway is a small semi-rural suburb in the north-east of the City of Casey, with a village of houses on traditional blocks surrounded by lifestyle, horse and hobby-farm properties. Fencing here ranges from paling and slat fences around village homes to long rural runs, post-and-rail paddock fencing, entry gates and pillars.
Because properties vary so much in size, age and access, every fence is assessed individually — the material, length, height, existing coating, vegetation and whether animals are kept nearby all shape the scope.
Northern Star Painting is based in Hallam and works across Harkaway and nearby Berwick and Narre Warren North.
Fence types we paint and stain
Paint, stain, repair or replace?
A coating protects and refreshes a sound fence. It does not fix rotten posts, loose palings or structural failure.
| Option | What it means | When it may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Paint | Solid colour coating | Sound fences where a uniform colour is wanted |
| Stain | Colour with grain visible | Sound timber where a natural look is preferred |
| Repair + coat | Defects fixed by the right trade first | Isolated loose palings or damaged rails |
| Replace | New fencing by a fencing contractor | Extensively rotten or failed fencing |
Animals, livestock and paddocks
If horses or livestock are kept on or beside the fence, tell us at quote so access, drying and curing time and the coating choice can be discussed against the manufacturer’s data sheet, and animals can be kept away until it is appropriate according to that data sheet. We make no claim that any coating is safe for animals or horses.
Dividing fences and neighbours
A dividing fence between two properties is generally shared under Victoria’s Fences Act 1968, so owners should talk to their neighbour before changing the appearance or colour of their side. This is general information, not legal advice; Consumer Affairs Victoria has guidance.
COLORBOND® fences and warranty
BlueScope’s guidance says COLORBOND® steel can be overpainted with the right preparation and coating selection, but overpainting can affect or void the manufacturer’s warranty. Check your warranty conditions before proceeding.
Older fences, asbestos and lead
Older cement-sheet (fibro) fences may contain asbestos, and it can’t be identified by appearance. Suspected material should be assessed by a qualified professional before it is disturbed, and it is never pressure-washed. Older painted timber may contain lead, which changes how preparation is handled.
Some Harkaway properties are affected by planning overlays; check your property with the City of Casey before changing externally visible colours. Painting a fence does not change a property’s bushfire compliance.

Fence Painting Harkaway FAQs
How much does fence painting cost in Harkaway?
There is no set Harkaway price. Our published indicative ranges are Standard residential fence: $600 – $2,500+; Long boundary or double-sided fence: $2,500 – $6,000+. Length, height, material, condition, gates, posts, access and vegetation all affect the price. Every project is individually quoted after inspection, with the agreed scope provided in writing.
Can you paint post-and-rail fences?
Yes. Post-and-rail fences are cleaned, prepared and coated with a system suited to the timber and its condition. Long runs are measured and quoted at inspection.
Should I paint or stain a timber fence?
Paint gives a solid, uniform colour; stain lets the grain show and is often easier to refresh. The choice depends on the timber, its condition, the look you want and the maintenance you’re happy with.
Can you paint a Colorbond® fence?
Yes, with the right preparation and coating system. BlueScope advises that overpainting can affect its warranty, so check your warranty conditions before going ahead.
Can you paint a mixed timber and steel fence?
Yes. Each material is prepared and primed to suit — timber and steel need different systems — so the finished colour matches while each part is properly coated.
Do I need my neighbour’s agreement to paint a dividing fence?
A dividing fence is generally shared under Victoria’s Fences Act 1968, so it’s sensible to talk to your neighbour before changing the appearance or colour of your side. This is general information, not legal advice; Consumer Affairs Victoria has guidance.
What if horses or livestock are kept beside the fence?
Tell us at quote. Access, drying and curing time and the coating choice can then be discussed against the manufacturer’s data sheet, with animals kept away until that data sheet says it is appropriate. We make no claim that any coating is safe for animals.
Can you paint an old fibro or cement-sheet fence?
Older cement-sheet fences may contain asbestos, which can’t be identified by looking at it. Suspected material must be assessed by a qualified professional before cleaning or disturbance, and it is never pressure-washed. WorkSafe Victoria has guidance.
Can you paint entry gates and pillars?
Yes. Timber and metal gates, and brick or rendered pillars, can be included in the scope and prepared to suit each material.
How long does a painted fence last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the material, preparation, exposure, vegetation contact and the coating system used.
